Propranolol
A beta blocker used situationally for the physical side of performance anxiety — the racing heart, the shaking hands, the voice that will not stay steady.
Your consult is free. We will not prescribe this — or anything — before a clinician has spoken with you and reviewed your bloodwork. Final cost depends on the form and dose prescribed.

Mechanism
It works on the body, not the mind.
Propranolol blocks beta-adrenergic receptors, which is where adrenaline does its physical work: heart rate, tremor, sweating, the tight chest.
It does not sedate you and it does not touch the thought itself. What it removes is the physical feedback loop — the racing heart that convinces your brain something is wrong, which produces more adrenaline.
For presentations, performances and interviews it is taken situationally, an hour or so before. It is a long-established medication used off-label for this purpose.

Protocol
How treatment usually runs.
A typical schedule. Yours is set by your clinician after your labs come back.
| Phase | Weeks | Typical | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Situational | As needed | Taken ~1 hour before | Only when you need it. |
| Daily | If prescribed | Individualised | Some people are prescribed a regular low dose. |
| Review | Ongoing | Provider check-in | Blood pressure and heart rate are monitored. |

Evidence
What the research shows.
Beta blockers reduce the peripheral symptoms of anxiety — tremor, tachycardia, sweating — and are widely used off-label for situational performance anxiety.
They do not treat generalised anxiety disorder or panic disorder, for which other treatments are first-line.
Propranolol is FDA-approved for cardiovascular indications; this use is off-label.
Results vary. Clinical trial results apply only to the FDA-approved branded medication specifically identified and do not apply to compounded medications. All medications must be prescribed by a licensed provider based on medical necessity.
Safety and eligibility
Your consult and labs screen for all of the following.
- Not for asthma. Beta blockers can cause serious bronchospasm — tell your provider.
- Not with a slow heart rate or low blood pressure, or certain heart conduction problems.
- Do not stop a daily dose abruptly — it must be tapered.
- Care with diabetes — it can mask the warning signs of a low blood sugar.
- Off-label for this use, prescribed at your provider's discretion.
FAQ
Propranolol questions.
It should not. It acts on the physical symptoms rather than sedating you, which is precisely why it is used before performances rather than a sedative.
No. It is not habit-forming and is not a controlled substance. A regular daily dose does need tapering rather than stopping suddenly.
It is not the right tool for that. It treats the physical symptoms of situational stress. Ongoing anxiety deserves a proper conversation about treatments that address the cause.
