Mechanism
One draw, many signals.
Cancer cells shed DNA into the bloodstream. Galleri looks for methylation patterns on that circulating DNA that are characteristic of cancer, and — if it finds a signal — predicts where in the body it originated.
It is designed to sit alongside standard screening, not replace it. Mammograms, colonoscopy and the rest still apply.
A positive result is a reason for diagnostic follow-up, not a diagnosis. A negative result does not mean cancer is absent.

What the research shows.
Galleri detects a shared cancer signal across many cancer types and predicts the likely origin. Detection rates vary substantially by cancer type and stage, and are higher in later stages.
It is intended to complement, not replace, guideline-recommended screening.
A negative result does not rule out cancer. Continue with all standard screening you are due.
Results vary. Clinical trial results apply only to the FDA-approved branded medication specifically identified and do not apply to compounded medications. All medications must be prescribed by a licensed provider based on medical necessity.
Safety and eligibility
Your consult and labs screen for all of the following.
- Not a substitute for standard screening. Keep every screening appointment you are due.
- A positive result needs follow-up — imaging or biopsy — and can be an anxious wait.
- False positives and false negatives both occur. Discuss what each result would mean before you test.
- Requires a provider's order and a confirmed follow-up pathway.
- New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island — our main lab network does not cover these three states. Tell the care team before you book and they will arrange an alternative.
FAQ
Galleri by Grail questions.
No. It means no cancer signal was detected in that sample. Many cancers, particularly early ones, shed too little DNA to be found this way. Keep up with your usual screening.
Your provider arranges diagnostic follow-up, usually imaging, guided by the predicted origin. A positive signal is not a diagnosis.
Annually is the usual pattern, but that is a conversation with your provider rather than a rule.
